Catnip Questions

What is so special about Kitty Hooch catnip?
Kitty Hooch is the only mass produced catnip that is hand processed. All commercial catnip is mulched. Once catnip is mulched it exposes all the essential oils to oxygenation. Commercial catnip rarely has any care taken to preserve the essential oils while Kitty Hooch takes care in every step, from farming, to harvest, to processing to storage. There is more information about what makes us unique in the questions below.
My cat doesn't like catnip. Will it like yours?
We can say with over 95% certainty that when a customer says their cat doesn't like catnip it is not the cat, it's the catnip. Read more about why our catnip is special but in short it's about the processing. Commercial catnip typically begins as a mediocre product and then is effectively all but ruined by mulching and improper storage. As for your cat, each cat has a different threshold. Some respond to commercial cat. On the other end of the spectrum a very few cats only respond to straight loose bud. See our guarantee and what we think about the industry for more.
Is organic catnip best?
We would tend to agree. However I can take organic vegetables, grind them up and let them dry to dust for six months and then make a salad for you. It's organic, so it's better, right? Organic is only about how it is grown. It's more sustainable and it makes more sense to us. However that turns out to be a small part of what makes for a good catnip product. See our first question about why we are special.
Is all catnip pretty much the same?
In the pet store, yes. Most producers do not grow to flower before harvesting, but all of it is mulched. It's all dried out and smells like stale oregano instead of skunky mint. Kitty Hooch is unique and different because it is grown to full flower and then hand processed. It's like comparing white lightning to stale beer. So yes, every other catnip is pretty much the same.
How does catnip work?
The airborne oils, what we perceive as scent, causes the effect on your cat. Technically the oil is nepetalactone and the effect is an aphrodisiac, although most cats have no idea why they feel good, they just feel good. You will see your cat's nose twitch and their eyes dilate, then the fun begins. Some cats may appear hung over after. Don't worry.
Is catnip safe for cats?
On rare occasions I heard people say their cat was allergic to catnip. I checked with several vets who said they have never heard of this. In one case I believe it was because that cat had been observed drooling. About 20% of cats have this reaction when they smell catnip. As for the safety, there are no known reactions that are a problem and no possibility of a cat overdosing. Occasionally we have heard of young cats who ran away from really strong catnip, but we followed those cases and those cats eventually got into the catnip.
Is it safe to give kittens catnip?
Remember the circle of whispers? Cats need to reach and age of sexual maturity to respond to catnip. Typically this is 3-6 months. Before then they don't respond. Many people confuse and conflate until you will hear it is bad for kittens. That simply is not true.
What about these people who say their catnip is the best?
I could pick these claims apart individually, just like another vendor who used to make this claim while while lying about her competition. I'll keep it simple. See our response to if all catnip is the same. In simple terms Kitty Hooch is the only whole hand processed catnip and the only products with guarantees. If their catnip is so good why won't they give you your money back when your cat doesn't like it?
Is catnip magical?
People who prefer magic over science are waiting to be duped and relieved of their money. We hope that's not you. We prefer science. Knowing how things work means knowing how to acheive the best possible result. However if you do think things are magic you are in sync with the mainstream. We just want better...
Do all cats respond to catnip
There is a saying that behind every good lie is a kernel of truth. The truth is not all cats respond. The lie is how many don't, which is all over the board at 40%-60% or more either way. In our experience it is only a few percent at our potency. Different cats have different thresholds, so different potency, different cat, different result. This makes for a handy excuse if your product never reached full potency, then what little potency it had was stripped away by commercial processing and handling methods. Companies can claim they have the best, then blame your cat when their lousy product fails to deliver. See what we think of the industry below.
How would you explain the catnip industry?
Let's be honest. If someone told you they had excellent powdered mint or great beer that had been setting open for six months and your tried it and hated it and asked for your money back what do you think would happen? The difference here is simple. What we do at Kitty hooch, hand processing, takes a lot of time and costs a lot of money. There is no way to produce tons and tons of cheap product without machines. Never mind that some agricultural products have to be hand picked and processed or they are ruined. This is for cats. They can't tell you what you bought is sheer crap and there is a convenient excuse the industry can use to keep from giving you your money back. Let's face it, if they offered a money back guarantee they'd have to at least double the price. I suspect even more. The bottome line though is these people at big companies either don't know the science or simply don't care about the results. They do care about getting your money and keeping it. They are willing to blame your cat for their producing a product that is a pale shadow of what it should be. We think that's pretty pathetic.

Catnip Toy questions

Someone says they have the best catnip toys. Do they?
Claims like this should be substantiated. Only Kitty Hooch offers a 110% favorite toy gaurantee. That's because we know what is out there. Read though this section. We know for a fact that every commercial toy and all but a few rare boutique toys are innefective and worse they are also potentially harmful or deadly. If you believe in your product you guarantee like we do. Otherwise it's hot air.
Are all catnip toys pretty much the same?
Well most of them are made in China and who knows what they have been exposed to. But oddly enough boutique toys largely copy commercial toy features and try to distinguish their product by cuteness. Sadly that means safety and potency are ignored. Of course that doesn't prevent false claims being made in those areas.
Is there a problem with the way catnip toys are marketed?
You're not going to like this answer. There is a problem. You are the problem. Why? Well you perceive things differently than your cat. Look carefully. Your cat does not surf the Internet. Cat toys are marketed to people. You go for cuteness, suck up marketing speak and deliver disappointment to kitty. Thankfully many people keep trying until they find us. Kitty Hooch wants to make your cat happy. We know for that to happen we can't ignore your desire for cute, but we also know if you get one of our toys your cat will be the latest hire in our marketing department. When you get our product you quickly find out we design for cats first, then sprinkle on cute your you silly humans.
My cat doesn't like toys. Why try Kitty Hooch?
Because we're different. Kitty Hooch is the only toy with whole hand processed organic catnip inside. Only Kitty Hooch has a 110% favorite toy guarantee. Finally if you meet us in person at one of the events we do you will see other customers come up and tell you "this is the only toy my cat ever responded to". We know. We hear it all the time. Read though this FAQ to see why.
Why is Kitty Hooch the only guranteed cat toy?
We deliver! Let's face it, if half of cats don't respond to commercial mulch you'd be nuts to offer a guarantee. We know you've been hurt before. We know the disappointment of your cat looking at you like you were an idiot whey you gave them a toy. It's why we are here. We were so angry when we discovered it was the industry, not my cat, that ruined our catnip toy party. You should be skeptical, but when you finally find the one that figured out how to make your cat dance you need to get it in front of Kitty. Thus the guarantee.
Are catnip toys safe for cats?
In the theoretical sense, yes. There is no danger from pure catnip or a properly constructed toy. In the practical sense almost all cat toys you look at are not safe. Some safety issues you will note are beads or bells on the outside that a cat can choke on, loose threads can actually be fatal, which is why we sew many things inside out. The big problem is pretty much every toy uses synthetic fiber fill for stuffing. Unfortunatly if a cat gets it on their tongue they end up eating it and it's indigestible. Worst case is an impacted bowel, fatal if not caught in time. Kitty Hooch takes all these things into account along with years of interacting with customers and veterinarians to insure our toys are safe.
I heard somebody had "cat safe stuffing" in their toys?
You heard that baloney too? When we announced our recycled blanket stuffing it would have been easier for the other vendor at the Saturday market to copy us. Instead she "deemed" her synthetic filler safe. We have had customers who shopped with both of us and now only shop with us tell us otherwise. Rule one, saying something doesn't make it so. Synthetic fiber is indigestible. Is assuming it will safely pass through you cat a risk you are willing to take? For the sake of your cat I sincerely hope not.
Why are catnip toys so dissapointing?
See our coverage of what makes our catnip different. With cat toys you typically find a little tiny bit of ground stalk and dust that used to be leaf somewhere in it. It's just enough impotent stale plant matter to be able to call it a catnip toy, even though we think it bears no resemblance. But remember, it's cute, so you bought it. See our question about the problem with the way toys are marketed.
Why are there no eyes on our mouse toy?
I think most people know better than to ask this, but if you're wondering, we don't want kitty to choke to death on something they chewed off a toy you gave them.
Why don't you use fiber fill in your toys?
See the questions avove about safety. While every cat toy we looked at had synthetic fiber fill we heard too many horror stories about cats being rushed to the vet at 4 AM for emergency surgery for an impacted bowel. Simply put fiber fill should never go in a cat toy.
Why do you used recycled materials?
We believe in recycled products as a responsible choice to minimize waste. However there are also more practical reasons for our material choices. We use recycled wool coats for the Mouse, Nib Bird and Fish toy because of the durability and because it's a natural fiber. It is also a very expensive fiber and so we can use this choice without having to dramatically raise the price of our toys. We use recycled blankets again partially because of the cost factor and because they are a logical choice when compared to fiber fill. A cat can put their paw on a piece of blanket and get it off their tongue, unlike the fiber fill, which they can't help but eat once it is on their tongue.
Are the cat toys I have now safe?
Sorry to say, if you read our comments on safety above they probably aren't. Then again there is good news. The good news is your cats will ignore those toys once they have Kitty Hooch toys. If you cat has an old toy that you observe wear on and they are playing with it be sure to dispose of it before they open it up. We can't stress enough how you want to avoid letting your cat eat fiber fill. You may get lucky... or you may get unlucky. Your cat deserves better than to get unlucky like that.
What makes Kitty Hooch toys safe?
If you have read the answers above you should know. We carefully select our materials, spend as long as a year on our designs and have them reviewed by veterinarians as well as our testing. We avoid choking items like exterior bells, eyes and loose threads and we never use synthetic fiber fill. In contrast you will be hard pressed to fina any toy you can say the same things about.
Why do we use pouches for our refillable toys?
Cats should be high maintenance. Toys and furniture should be zero maintenance. The pouch makes it easy to refill and it makes it easy to remove the catnip and wash the toys. Loose catnip would stick to everything and annoy you if you tried to remove and save it to clean the toy.

Cat Scratchers and Furniture Questions

How do I make my cat scratch on the scratcher I bought?
There's good news and bad news here. The good news is if you use our extremely potent hand processed organic catnip the odds are nearly perfect that your cat will scratch it. The bad news is if your scratcher wasn't designed to be refillable with our catnip then it's a daily job to rub our catnip on it. Use catnip from the store and good luck getting much attention. After over a year trying to solve this riddle we began designing pieces that could be refilled with our catnip pouches. This solution gives 2-6 months on average depending on the pouch and other factors.
Why does Kitty Hooch use carpet remnants?
In a word quality. Go to the store and see every piece is one color and you know they bought the cheapest carpet they could. Sadly that carpet was meant to last for 3 years of walking in a cheap apartment. You can pull the carpet apart with your hands if you try. Your cat can destroy it in short order. Now carpet that was made to last for 30 years is another matter. The backing is thick and hard and it will take at least 5-6 years in most cases to really tear it up. Remnants also allow us to get some really nice berber, frizee and other types of carpet in a variety of colors. It just looks better. Oh, and our remnants when they were on the roll cost 3-4 times as much as the cheap carpet by the roll.
Why does my cat scratcher leave such a mess?
See above. The materials choice simply isn't up to the abuse of a cat. Our designs will leave you happy that they require very little cleaning at all.
Why doesn't Kitty Hooch use natural wood or drift wood in their designs?
We don't like piles of splinters and watching something we spent good money on being destroyed so quickly. They just won't wear as long. If you want art, buy art. If you want something for your cat to scratch that is also artistic buy Kitty Hooch.
Why does my cat post fall over all the time?
It's called center of gravity. The center of gravity can be found by tipping a post and finding the point where letting go causes it to fall over. Usually that is only a few degrees of tipping. Our posts, the ones that you can tip, typically will lean 30-45 degrees or more and return to upright. You can improve center of gravity by adding weight low, enlarging the base and reducing the weight up high. Since pretty much everyone stupidly copies the use of heavy 4x4 posts (which will compression load to support the roof on your house) they are condemned to center of gravity issues. They also use huge metal lag bolts to hold the post to the base. Unfortunatly the cellulose fiber of wood gradually compresses until you see your post wobble. That's why we use metal to metal fastening systems. When a cat pushes off a wobbly post it boomerangs and falls over, often with hundreds of foot/pounds of dangerous force. Kitty Hooch guarantees their posts will not fall over under normal use.
Why doesn't Kitty Hooch make a plain post that is 3 foot tall?
If you think your cat needs to stretch to scratch remember first you are not a cat. Observe how cats use small post scratchers. They hold with one paw and pull with the other. A 3 foot post would need a 3 foot base and would end up costing as much as some smaller pieces that have much smaller footprints and are offer a perch up above.
Why won't my cat ever go in the little house on my post?
Typically those little houses have a tiny door, no windows and no rear exits. Cats instinctively know that this is the place you go to die. They always want to see what is going on and have a rear exit in case they are challanged. That is why you will find these key differences in Kitty hooch designs.
Why do all Kitty Hooch posts have rubber feet or furniture casters?
A better question is why this relatively inexpensive feautre isn't on all cat posts.
Why is Kitty Hooch the only company with a 6 month wear warranty?
So many customers told us the pieces they bought were utterly destroyed in 6 months. When we told them our own pieces lasted us years their eyes glazed over. We came to realize that some people just would not accept the longevity as a fact so we decided to guarantee it. The only customer to beat our guarantee did rescue and had one scratcher for over 50 cats.
Why do all Kitty Hooch designs have a catnip refill system?
The refill pouch system is the best way to get your cat to scratch. Our catnip really truly is devastatingly better than commercial mulch. We call the pouch system the no brainer trainer.
Why do Kitty Hooch designs cost so much/little?
Once in a while someone asks why our cat furniture is so expensive and someone else askes why it is so cheap. It's all relative. Given that it is unique in design, the only cat furniture with a 6 month wear warranty, the only catnip pouch refill system and a number of other innovations in design we think it is the best value, regarless of cost. In fact for many people our largest palaces will cost less to own over 10 years than cardboard scratchers. However you look at it we hope you see the value. Given the design, research, innovation and work that goes into our cat furniture we feel it's not really practical to charge what it's really worth, and this is why we always have happy customers.
